- Dear D.J. Walker-Morgan,
-
-
-
-
-
-
- ...You have caught me completely off guard.
-
-
- I did not expect you to write into Java cyberspace, or that you would do
- so in such a way that I could Followup the above Article.
-
-
- I believe you sincerely wish to change the way things are going. And, as
- they say, a sincere belief that something is so, makes it so.
-
-
- I suspect that you might be referring to myself here:
-
-
- >A person (who is no longer a member of iJUGGL after this evenings
- >meeting and has never been an iJUGGL elected represetative) has been
- >announcing in this group that he is in some way the official contact
- >for the group. He is not.
-
-
- Is this not correct?
-
-
- If you recall, I was ejected from this past Friday night's IJUGGL meeting
- at Micromuse, by the building security, for disturbing the group.
-
-
- I was asking questions to Mr. Paul White, the man from Symantec, about
- whether it did "Code completion", whether it had bold/underline/italic syntax
- highlighting so you could look at code without being distracted by decorative
- colors. (BTW, this was my absurd justification for choosing Borland C++ 4.0
- over Microsoft Visual C++ two years ago)
-
-
- Perking up at the class browser, and being very aware that only 15 or so
- people were in the room this month, I asked him how much it was. And I think
- he did reply with the figure.
-
-
- At this point, having rubbed eachother up the wrong way previously, you
- took me aside and told me it was very rude to interrupt a salesman during his
- presentation. I know you objected to that word "salesman" at the time, but I
- can't think of the phrase you actually used.
-
-
- We probably both regret slightly, in different ways, the way things have
- so far turned out at iJUGGL. As I said, this letter is a complete
- surprise...
-
-
- ...But I admire the way you almost lost your temper completely on the way
- downstairs. _Very_ few people are able to do that nowadays.
-
-
- And Sir, I also distinctly remember being reminded of one of Richard
- Feynman's books when you immediately shot your hand up in unsurpressable
- glee, and shouted "Meeeeee!!", when, at the start of his presentation, Mr.
- White asked if anyone was actually using the Symantec product.
-
-
- I must clarify, make it explicit, that I have never claimed to be "in
- some way the official contact for the group". I have only offered,
- implicitly, to be of help by encouraging people to come to the group, which
- is, _as_far_as_I_am_aware_, still the only Java user group in the United
- Kingdom.
-
-
- So, in lieu of any explicit statement, I appeal directly to your good
- judgement, a recent reply by myself to an article in the iJUGGL mailing list

- Thanks for your impressions. I got Nutshell through the post from
- the US. I haven't really looked hard at it, but it's a billion times
- better than that first "Java!" book I idiotically went and bought for
- twice the price.
-
-
- Come on iJUGGL. Start using this mailing list.
-
-
- It never crossed my mind to consider reviewing Nutshell for you.
-
-
- Come on, or the cows will come out at night and start mooing.
